Good evening my friend!

It has been almost a full week since my last recipe post, another steamed Filipino dish Puto. Like that, this is another recipe I’ve taken steaming out and put baking in. I just love the texture. It is less chewy, but the flavor is just so worth it. Anyways, I hope you’ve been well! It is incredibly hot and humid where I am. But never too hot for some siopao I think its a great dinner item. Its such a great leftover too, so easy to just warm it back up and go. I do hope you end up making a batch of these, as I will continue to. Thank you for reading and take care my friend.

Detailed directions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl combine the yeast, sugar, and water. Stir and let sit 5 minutes. If after 10 minutes there is still no bubbling and the yeast seems inactive, start over with 100°F water.
  2. Combine rest of ingredients/Preheat oven: Add the bread flour, salt, and coconut oil to the yeast mixture. Knead for 10 minutes. Cover the bowl with a wet towel and let dough rise for one hour in a warm place. Preheat the oven to 375°. Combine all the ingredients and mix together until fully incorporated. Knead the dough using a spatula in the bowl to fold over itself or alternatively you can knead the dough by hand on a lightly floured surface.
  3. Divide and bake: Divide the dough into 12 pieces and stuff with desired filling then shape. I personally prefer a crescent shape. Starting with a stretched log, ill each siopao with at least a couple tablespoons of filling then roll it closed. pinch the ends towards each other to make a letter “C” shape. Bake at 375°F for 20 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy!

Notes

The siopao will be very hot out of the oven.
For a warm place, I use the inside of the oven with the light on.
I’m personally fond of the crescent and envelop shaped siopao.
